What it means

What does the railway crossing with a stop sign mean in NSW?

Two white boards with black edges form a big X on a grey post: one reads CROSSING, the other is split into RAIL and WAY. Under it is a red octagon STOP sign. This is a level crossing with no lights or gates, so the stop is up to you. You halt at the line every time, look along the track both ways, and cross only when no train is approaching.

What to do

  1. 1

Stop fully at the stop line before the tracks.

  2. 2

Look and listen both ways along the line.

  3. 3

Cross only when you are sure no train is coming.
