How many questions are in the NSW DKT?
Quick answer
How many questions are on the NSW driver knowledge test?
The car driver knowledge test in NSW has 45 multiple choice questions. They come in two parts: 15 general knowledge questions and 30 road safety questions, picked at random from a much larger bank. Each question gives you three possible answers and only one is correct. You need to pass both parts at the same sitting to apply for your learner licence.
- Questions45Drawn at random from a large bank
- Sections15 + 30General knowledge, then road safety
- Answer options3One correct answer per question
What the 45 questions are made of
| Part 1 | Part 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Section | General knowledge | Road safety |
| Questions | 15 | 30 |
| Broadly covers | Road rules, licence conditions and penalties | Speed choice, alcohol and drugs, hazards, signs and sharing the road |
| Pass mark | 12 | 29 |
Subjects worth knowing before you sit it
- Speed limits, including school zones and the default limits in built up areas
- Give way at intersections, roundabouts and T intersections
- Regulatory and warning signs, and what road markings tell you
- Learner and P plate conditions: speed caps, zero alcohol, no phone use
- Alcohol and drug limits for each licence type
- Pedestrians, cyclists, buses and emergency vehicles
- Parking and stopping rules
- Driving at night, in rain and when tired
Three options, one right answer
Every question offers three choices. Usually one is plainly wrong, one sounds close and one is the rule. The close one is where marks are lost, because it often swaps a single number or a single word.
Read the whole question and all three options before you choose. A question about a school zone or a stopped emergency vehicle can hinge on one detail.

Common questions
- Are the questions the same for everyone?
- No. The questions are chosen at random from a large bank, so two people sitting on the same day will see different sets.
- Is it multiple choice?
- Yes. Each question has three answer options and you pick the one you think is correct.
- Does the online DKT have 45 questions too?
- Service NSW describes the DKT online as a course followed by a final test but does not publish how many questions that test has. Service NSW also says its practice test is meant for the in-person DKT.
- Where can I see sample questions?
- Service NSW links to a free NSW practice test and a published list of car test questions from its in-person booking page.
