What it means
What does the 40 km/h school zone sign mean in NSW?
A tall white plate reading SCHOOL ZONE over a red ringed 40 marks the start of the zone. On school days the limit is 40 km/h during the hours printed on the sign, which for most NSW schools are 8 am to 9:30 am and 2:30 pm to 4 pm. Many signs add flashing lights during those times, and white triangles, often called dragon's teeth, may be painted at the lane edges.
What to do
1
Note the clock as you pass the sign, and drop to 40 if the zone is active.
2
Hold 40 until the END SCHOOL ZONE sign, not just past the gate.
3
Expect children to dart out near crossings, buses and parked cars.
