What it means
What does the 50 km/h speed limit sign mean in NSW?
The 50 in a red ring is the number you will live with most as a learner. Where houses, shops or other buildings line the road, NSW sets a 50 km/h limit even if no sign is in sight, so a posted 50 is often just a reminder. You will see it after leaving a faster road and entering a suburb, or at the start of a quiet town street.
What to do
1
Slow to 50 as you pass the sign, even if the road still feels open.
2
Assume 50 in any street lined with buildings and no signs.
3
Keep well below it near parked cars, shops and bus stops.
