Stop sign

Come to a complete stop at the line, then give way before you move.

What it means

What does the stop sign mean in NSW?

An eight-sided red sign with STOP in white letters is the strongest instruction you will meet at an intersection. It asks for two things in order: your wheels stop turning, and then you let through every vehicle and person you would otherwise cross or drive into. Stop behind the white stop line, or just before the intersection if no line is painted. An empty road changes nothing about the first part.

What to do

  1. 1

Brake early and bring the car to a dead stop behind the line.

  2. 2

Look both ways, and creep forward after stopping if a fence or hedge blocks your view.

  3. 3

Move off only when the road you are entering or crossing is clear.

STOP

After stopping at a stop sign at an intersection, who must you give way to?

Right. Not quite. The answer is A.

Stopping is only the first step, after which you give way to vehicles in or approaching the intersection and, if you turn, to pedestrians crossing the road you enter.

Common questions

Do you have to stop at a stop sign if no cars are coming?
Yes. The full stop is required every time, and only the giving way part depends on traffic.
Where exactly do you stop at a stop sign?
Just behind the stop line across your lane. With no line, stop before you reach the intersection at a point where you can see traffic coming.
