People crossing a city street away from a crossing

Give way to anyone crossing in front of you if there is any chance of hitting them, crossing or not.

What it means

People crossing a city street away from a crossing: what should you do?

A driver's view up a city street between tall buildings, with your yellow bonnet in front. There is no zebra and no lights in sight, yet three people are on the road: one in your lane ahead and two more walking across from the right. Being away from a marked crossing gives you no right of way over them. Whenever there is a danger of hitting someone on foot, you slow down and give way.

What to do

  1. 1

Scan both footpaths for people stepping off the kerb mid-block.

  2. 2

Slow down as soon as someone moves onto the road.

  3. 3

Give way, and stop if you need to, without sounding the horn at them.
