Leave at least 1 metre when passing a bike on roads up to 60 km/h, and at least 1.5 metres above that.

Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 144-1Asked in road safetyShown in one practice question

What it means

The minimum gap when passing a cyclist: what is the rule?

Two roads sit side by side, each with a cyclist near the left edge and a yellow car passing with a straight yellow arrow. The left panel, labelled 60 or less, has a small 1 m measure between bike and car. The right panel, labelled over 60, shows a wider 1.5 m gap. The faster the road, the more room the rider gets, measured to the nearest part of your car.

What to do

  1. 1

Check the speed limit as you come up behind the rider.

  2. 2

Wait behind until you can give the full gap safely.

  3. 3

Measure the space to your closest point, mirrors included, as you pass.
