What it means

What does the bicycles ahead sign mean in NSW?

A black bicycle on the yellow diamond marks a road where riders are common, such as a popular cycling route, a path crossing or a narrow road without a shoulder. Cyclists are allowed on the road and may ride in the middle of a lane or two side by side. When you pass one, NSW law sets a minimum side gap that depends on the speed limit.

What to do

  1. 1

Slow down and wait behind until it is safe to pass.

  2. 2

Leave at least 1 metre where the limit is 60 km/h or less, and 1.5 metres above.

  3. 3

Check for riders before opening your door or turning left.
