Warning sign · Animals and people
Children may be crossing ahead, so slow down and be ready to stop.
What it means
Two black figures, one taller and one smaller, walk side by side on a yellow diamond. The sign warns rather than commands: children are likely to cross the road ahead, often near schools, parks or a children's crossing. If you reach a crossing with its flags out and anyone on it or stepping onto it, the law then says you must stop and stay stopped until it is clear.
Ease off and cover the brake as soon as you see it.
Scan footpaths and the gaps between parked cars for small people.
At a flagged crossing, wait until nobody at all is left on it.

When you stop for a hand held stop sign at a children's crossing, you stay stopped until the crossing is clear and the supervisor stops showing the sign or signals you to go.
