Staying behind a long vehicle that is turning

Stay behind a long vehicle that is turning, and never pass on the side it is turning towards.

Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 143Asked in road safetyShown in one practice question

What it means

Staying behind a long vehicle that is turning: what is the rule?

A long white truck is turning left into a side street, its cab already round the corner while the trailer still fills the main road, leaving a gap on its left. The yellow car is behind it. A faint dashed arrow slipping up that left gap carries a red cross, because the trailer will sweep across it as the truck goes round. The safe move is to wait behind until the turn is done.

What to do

  1. 1

Watch for a do not overtake turning vehicle sign on the back of a long vehicle.

  2. 2

Hold back and leave the truck plenty of room as it swings.

  3. 3

Move on only once it has fully finished turning.
