Double parking beside a parked car is banned

Never stop next to a car parked at the kerb, even briefly; find a legal spot instead.

Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 189Asked in road safetyShown in 3 practice questions

What it means

Double parking beside a parked car is banned: what is the rule?

A line of white cars is parked along the left kerb, every space taken. The plate-yellow car has stopped in the traffic lane right beside one of them, and a red cross on it marks the stop as illegal. Another white car travels on in the next lane. Waiting there for a space, dropping off a friend or making a delivery all count as double parking, and hazard lights do not make it legal.

What to do

  1. 1

Drive on when the kerb is full rather than stopping beside a parked car.

  2. 2

Look for a legal space further along or around the corner.

  3. 3

Let passengers out only once you have pulled into a proper spot.
