Faster cars passing you on a 70 km/h road
Let faster cars pass and keep to your limit; never speed up while you are being overtaken.
What it means
Faster cars passing you on a 70 km/h road: what should you do?
A driver's view over your yellow bonnet on an open road, with a red ringed 70 sign on the left verge. You are in the left lane, and two white cars with speed lines behind them are pulling past in the lane to your right. They may be going faster than you, but other drivers speeding does nothing to the limit that applies to you. Keep left, hold or ease your speed and let them get by.
What to do
- 1
Check your speedometer and stay at or under 70.
- 2
Keep left and leave room for passing cars to move back in.
- 3
Do not speed up while someone is overtaking you.
Common questions
- Should I speed up to keep pace with traffic going over the limit?
- No. Stay at or under the limit; what other drivers do does not change it.
- What should you do when another car overtakes you?
- Keep left, hold or ease your speed and give it room to move back in. Speeding up while being overtaken is an offence.
