What it means
What does the school bus flashing 40 sign mean in NSW?
Across the top of our white plate runs a black band with two round amber lamps, both glowing, and beneath it a large red ringed 40. You see it on the back of a school bus. When those lamps flash, children may be getting on or off, so you must not pass the bus faster than 40 km/h. That holds whatever the road limit is, on an 80 road as much as a 50.
What to do
1
Brake down to 40 km/h as soon as you see the lamps flashing.
2
Stay at or under 40 until you are clear of the bus.
3
Look out for children stepping from behind it or crossing the road.

Common questions
Does the flashing 40 on a school bus apply on a highway?
Yes. While the lights flash you must not pass the bus faster than 40 km/h, whatever the road limit.
Why do school buses have flashing 40 lights?
They flash while children may be getting on or off, so drivers slow right down as they pass.
