ONE WAY

Road scene · Intersection scenes

Turning right from a one-way street

On a one-way road, start a right turn from the far right side.

Road Rules 2014 (NSW) rule 32Asked in general knowledgeShown in one practice question

What it means

Turning right from a one-way street: what is the rule?

A three lane road carries traffic one way only, shown by the ONE WAY sign on the left verge and straight arrows painted in the lanes. The plate-yellow car sits in the right-hand lane with its right indicator on and follows a yellow path into the cross street. A white car stays over in the left lane. With nothing coming towards you, the far right of the road is where a right turn starts.

What to do

  1. 1

Read the one way sign and move to the far right lane well before the corner.

  2. 2

Signal right early and do a head check as you change lanes.

  3. 3

Turn into the cross street, letting anyone crossing it finish first.

Common questions

Which lane do you turn right from on a one-way street?
The far right lane, because there is no oncoming traffic to keep clear of on that side.
Do I still signal for a right turn on a one-way street?
Yes. Signal right early so drivers beside and behind you know where you are heading.
